Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cashmere ?

Cashmere is the down of the Capra Hircus goat, found at elevations of 14,000 feet and above in the high plateaus of Kashmir, Nepal and Inner Mongolia. Temperatures here barely rise above minus 30 degrees Celsius in winter, but these goats produce fibers that protect them and keep them warm. Cashmere is found on the goat’s underbelly, underneath the coarse outer hair. It is harvested naturally and gently in spring when the goat naturally sheds. Each goat only produces approx. 90 grams of cashmere each year, leading to it being christened ‘soft gold’ as it is precious and rare.

What does FOB Kathmandu Rate mean?

FOB is an INCOTERMS (International Commercial Terms), which is a universally recognized set of definitions of international trade terms. FOB Kathmandu rate includes the selling price of the good and the delivery of the good on board the vessel at Kathmandu, Nepal. The rate does not include any shipping, handling, insurance charges and customs clearance charges at the buyer's country.

Why is cashmere expensive?

It is a rare commodity, like gold, and sold by the gram, just like gold. The harsh geography where these goats thrive means there are a limited number of goat herds, and it takes 3-4 goats to make a standard cashmere sweater. This makes it precious and therefore more expensive. There are other reasons though why cashmere is so special. It is light, soft and up to 8/9 times warmer than other woolen fibers! It also breathes so can be worn almost year round in our climate. If, like me, you can’t wear wool next to your skin as it itches, cashmere is perfect and can be worn 24/7 as no irritating factors. The soft, silky, warm attributes of cashmere also lend itself to creating beautiful garments that drape and sit beautifully, making them flattering, stylish and simply stunning.

How to Quick check cashmere quality ?

-Cashmere should feel soft and not scratchy against your skin. The better quality cashmere is soft, but not overly soft to touch – it softens over time. Some companies increase the softness by treating the cashmere with chemical additives and softeners or by over washing it.This reduces the life of the cashmere garment, so beware of cashmere that feels unbelievably soft. -Gently stretch out a piece of the cashmere and see if it springs back into shape. Good quality cashmere will, lower-quality cashmere will remain out of shape. Also, stretch it and look through it. The tighter the knit of the cashmere the better quality it is and the better it will retain its shape and be less susceptible to holes. -Rub your hand over the cashmere item. If little balls start forming it is a sign that the cashmere used contains an excess amount of shorter hairs which means lower quality. All cashmere will pill when rubbed over time, but if it pills immediately it’s a sign of low-quality cashmere. -100% cashmere is luxurious. It feels soft and offers great insulation keeping you warm in winter and cool in spring. Cashmere becomes softer with age and rarely pills after being worn and washed. It travels well and doesn’t wrinkle. Cashmere should last a lifetime. A blend will combine cashmere with wool, silk or synthetic fibers. These cheaper fibers lower the price. Also, blends are often made with lower quality cashmere that is made of thicker and shorter cashmere hairs. Buying a blend means you’re compromising price for the very things that make cashmere so sought after – it’s soft, light-weight and insulating properties. Cashmere is 8/9 times warmer than sheep’s wool, yet significantly lighter, which means to reap the full reward of cashmere you should invest in only 100% cashmere items.

What about Ply? What is the different between 2-ply and 4-ply Garment ?

Ply is the number of cashmere threads twisted together to make the cashmere yarn. Two twisted threads are referred to as 2-ply, and three twisted threads are referred to as 3-ply, etc. Since cashmere is a fine hair, it benefits from the increased strength in the twisted thread. Look for items that are 2-ply or higher, as 1-ply cashmere is less durable and is more likely to develop holes. Higher plies such as 4-ply add additional weight and warmth but do not indicate the additional quality.

What is mean of Yarn Count?

Yarn count describes the thickness of the yarn. There are different ways in which this can be calculated and, for our cashmere, we follow the woolen system – NM. The count of the yarn is measuring by the distance of a per inch twist of the yarn spinning process. Obviously, the higher the number of twists, the finer the yarn. Products quality also depends on yarn count.
